Percussion exercises are usually drawn on a staff with only one line. They will also often use a percussion clef. You can get one of these by opening the instruments dialog and selecting the following options: common instruments in the "choose from" box. percussion and drums in the "family" box. percussion [1 line] in the "instrument" box. Once these options are chosen, press the "add to score" button and then press the OK button. The percussion staff which is added to the score will only have one line but you can add notes above or below the line by entering different pitches. In these exercises the notes should be placed on the line (in other words, the line should go straight through the head of the note). In order to place notes on the line you will need to make sure that the notes all have the pitch B4. Because of the way that this particular percussion stave works, you will be able to tell if the pitch is right because notes on the line will trigger a snare drum sound and notes which are off the line will trigger no sounds. Another useful thing to know is that there is a plug-in that can make all the notes in a selection have the same pitch. From the main menus, go to plug-ins > notes and rests > make pitches constant.
