Creating a Different Instrument There are two ways to create a third violin. One is to create all the staves you need - with two violin IIs - and then choose staff names from the Ctrl+F1 menu. This brings up a dialog which lists every staff. Select the second violin II and then type the full and short names you want to appear in the score into the two edit boxes - probably Violin III and Vln. III. Finally, press the change button and then the close button. The staff will now bear the two names you put in the boxes. This is the fastest method but it has some draw backs. Most especially, you cannot use it to modify the name of a staff after an instrument change. The following method is better because It means that Violin III will be available in other scores. It also means that you can use it in instrument changes. 1. Use the new score dialog to create your score but only add violin I and violin II. 2. When the score is open, select a few bars of the violin II staff. 3. From the main menus choose House Style > Edit Instruments. 4. Press Alt+N to begin creating a new instrument based on violin II. 5. When you're asked to confirm if you want to continue, press the yes button. 6. The dialog which lets you set the properties for the new instrument opens. 7. The first five edit boxes are for the instrument's names and you need to fill them all in. 8. The first box is the name which will appear in the instruments dialog. 9. The second box is the name which will appear to the left of the first system in the score. 10. The third box is the short name that will appear next to all subsequent systems in the score. 11. The fourth box is the name that will appear above the last note before an instrument change. 12. The fifth box is the name that will appear above the instrument change itself. 13. When you've filled in all the boxes press Enter to confirm the settings. 14. Keep confirming dialogs until your placed back in the score. 15. Finally, open the instruments dialog (shortcut I). 16. You should find a new instrument called violin III in the lists. 17. Add that instrument to the score.
